FX acquires rights to ripped-from-the-headlines anthology series “FLORIDA MAN”

FX has acquired the rights to the anthology series Florida Man. Each half-hour episode will be comprised of three self-contained stories featuring the absurdly dumb and ludicrous crimes Floridians commit.

On Reddit, r/FloridaMan boasts over 300,000 subscribers and hardly a day goes by where a “Florida Man” headline doesn’t get national attention and go viral. The Sunshine State boasts stories of alligators being thrown in fast-food drive-through windows, a woman farting in a convenience store then threatening to stab an offended customer and a man violently punching a mailman because the mailman had no mail for him. Of course, those stories are just to name a few.

It seems that there are no limits to the outlandish, obscene or abnormal situations some Floridians get themselves into so we could see many seasons of Florida Man for years to come.

No word yet on when production will begin.

Netflix acquires film rights to “It Happened One Flight”

Netflix has acquired the film rights to the New York Times article It Happened One Flight which went viral in December 2017. As the story goes, two strangers sitting in different areas of the plane met on a cross-country Virgin America flight via a seat-to-seat chat conversation.

Noah Braun, sitting in seat 9C, on a whim, initiated a seat-to-seat chat with a completely random seat number, 24A. He did not know or see who was sitting in seat 24A but he sparked a chat anyway with a simple Hello. The stranger in 24A, Desiree Garret, with nothing to do on the cross-country flight, responded back with a simple question mark. But Noah’s persistent chats snowballed into what turned into a five-hour long chat conversation between the two strangers, both of whom agreed to not see each other while on the plane.

Instead, Noah and Desiree planned to meet once off the plane, at baggage claim. Less than a year later, they are engaged to be married.

Production is slated to begin in January 2019.

HBO acquires rights to memoir Bury Me Under Yankee Stadium

HBO has acquired rights to Joe Luchi’s memoir Bury Me Under Yankee Stadium. The memoir recounts the life of Joe’s father, Hank Luchi, a die-hard Yankees fan whose dying wish was to be buried under the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in April 2009.

Luchi’s memoir tells the story of his father’s life as it parallels the highs and lows of Yankees baseball from 1948 to 2007. The latter portion of the memoir details Joe Luchi’s attempts to bury his father’s ashes in the construction site of the new Yankee stadium, which broke ground in 2006. Ultimately, Joe was arrested for trespassing but the Yankees organization, after hearing his story, declined to press charges. The Yankees organization went a step further and even allowed Joe to spread his father’s ashes under the foundation of the new Yankee stadium.

HBO announced plans to produce an eight part mini-series based on Luchi’s memoir.

Fox Searchlight acquires rights to Swing For The Fences: How Two Immigration Lawyers Became Major League Baseball’s Greatest Agents.

Fox Searchlight has acquired rights to the real-life story of Trae Powers and Kenny Klein, two immigration lawyers turned powerful sports agents.

Powers and Klein opened their South Florida law practice in 1995. By 2001, their struggling law practice was on the brink of closing its doors until they represented a new client, Jose Carasco-Buendia. It was Klein who noticed Carasco-Buendia’s prodigious hand-eye coordination and on a whim, Powers and Klein took their client to the batting cages. Carasco-Buendia hit every 80 mph ball that came at him; some he hit with his eyes closed. After further assessing Carasco-Buendia’s abilities as a hitter and a fielder, Powers and Klein negotiated a contract for Carasco-Buendia and he signed with the Jupiter Hammerheads, the minor league affiliate of the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins). Carasco-Buendia made his first major league appearance with the Marlins in 2003 and helped them win the World Series that year, beating the New York Yankees in six games.

Powers and Klein were determined to prove their success wasn’t just a one-time fluke and they continued discovering international talent. To date, they have represented 187 players across all 30 MLB teams and have negotiated for over a billion dollars in contracts. Powers and Klein guarantee their clients two things: citizenship and multi-million dollar contracts.

Production is slated for Summer 2019.

Warner Bros. acquires rights to Our Ghost Son

Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to the Jackson family’s memoir, Our Ghost Son, that tells the real-life story of infertile married couple Ronald and Trish Jackson, who “adopt” the ghost of a two-year-old boy who had been haunting their house.

In 2007, Ronald and Trish discovered they were infertile and unable to conceive children. They agreed on moving cross-country for a change of scenery. They sold their house in Providence, Rhode Island and moved to Seattle, Washington where they bought a fixer-upper. Little did they know that the derelict house they recently purchased was abandoned years before after the death of the previous homeowner’s two-year-old son.

While restoring the house, Ronald and Trish find themselves haunted by the ghost of what they suspect is a young, mischevious child. They ultimately discover the child is the two-year-old boy who previously lived in the house. Although the two-year-old boy is going through the terrible twos (as a ghost), Ronald and Trish realize he’s the child they never had but always wanted.

Production is slated for Spring 2019.
