HBO has acquired rights to Joe Luchi’s memoir Bury Me Under Yankee Stadium. The memoir recounts the life of Joe’s father, Hank Luchi, a die-hard Yankees fan whose dying wish was to be buried under the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in April 2009.
Luchi’s memoir tells the story of his father’s life as it parallels the highs and lows of Yankees baseball from 1948 to 2007. The latter portion of the memoir details Joe Luchi’s attempts to bury his father’s ashes in the construction site of the new Yankee stadium, which broke ground in 2006. Ultimately, Joe was arrested for trespassing but the Yankees organization, after hearing his story, declined to press charges. The Yankees organization went a step further and even allowed Joe to spread his father’s ashes under the foundation of the new Yankee stadium.
HBO announced plans to produce an eight part mini-series based on Luchi’s memoir.
